Day 10 of Things I Love: Soup

Soup in the winter time is one of the easiest, most comforting things to eat. I eat it almost every day for either lunch or dinner and one of our favorite meals in our house is tomato soup and gourmet grilled cheese with granny smith apples. It is seriously so good.
If I want something loaded with calories, I'm going to eat Mexican food, so all of the soups I eat are really healthy and low in calories. Make them on Sunday to have for the week!

Day 8 of Things I Love: Tilley-Gray's favorite things

Having a baby changes (almost) everything, and thankfully there are a few things that I love because Tilley-Gray loves them. These make our days that much easier together. I promise I won't ever turn this blog into a baby blog, but I have had a few request on my favorite baby things, so here they are!

Mommaroo

(aka the baby whisperer)

This thing works miracles. My house is pretty small and I can't stand clutter, so this is the perfect compromise between a baby swing and a bouncy seat. It does both and buys us extra time because it (typically) puts Tilley-Gray right to sleep.

Baby Bjorn

This is Grayson's favorite thing to do with Tilley-Gray. When she is fussy or just wants to be held but we have 100 things to do around the house, we put her in this carrier. It soothes her and lets us get things done . It's pretty much the cutest I have ever seen my husband look too.

Bob Jogging Stroller

It's expensive, but totally worth it. I try and walk 3 or 4 miles a day with Tilley-Gray so I use this more than almost any other baby gadget we have. Once she is a little older, I'll be able to jog with her. It's the Cadillac of strollers, trust me.

Aden + Anais Muslin Blankets

In the hospital, I was kind of psycho about Tilley-Gray only being swaddled in her Aden + Anais blankets. I think the nurses I had been given so many and they were so much prettier than the hospital blankets. Serena and Lily has their own line of Aden + Anais blankets that are my favorite.

Bumbo Chair

Tilley-Gray is getting so big and strong (she is officially out of new born clothes) and has started to love her Bumbo chair. You can't tell in this photo, but she typically squeals when she is sitting in it.

Day 7 of Things I Love: Stud Earrings

I'm all about a hoop or chandelier earring, but my all time favorite earrings are stud earrings. From the tinniest to the massive, I love them all. I love Kenneth Jay Lane for the old Hollywood glamour look, Kate Spade for her cheeky bow earrings, and House of Harlow for a great every day earring. Here are some of my very favorite studs.

Day 6 of Things I Love: Bloch Ballet Flats

I grew up dancing and took ballet classes for 18 years, so I basically lived in ballet shoes and pink tights throughout my childhood and teenage years.Although I certainly miss dancing, I also miss the feeling of the soft leather ballet shoes that my mom would buy me before every season.

Maybe that's why I love Bloch ballet flats so much. The same company that we bought those pink ballet shoes from now make street shoes and I have become obsessed. They are beyond comfortable and get this, they make them for babies too! Matching ballet shoes for me and Tilley-Gray. I can't get enough!

Day 5 of Things I Love: Candles

Henri Bendel's Firewood Candle

A smokey and masculine scent, Henri Bendel's firewood candle is one of my favorites for fall and winter. It's the husband's favorite, and since we don't have a fireplace, it's nice to light on cold nights to at least give the smell of burning logs.

Tocca Grace Candle

An extra special treat to have in my office, my first Tocca candle was given to me by a client and I have been addicted since then. You don't even have to light the candle for it to make the entire room smell divine.

Capri Blue Candle

The reason that Anthropologie smells so good is the Capri candles that they have burning. This is my favorite candle to burn in the spring and summer with the windows wide open. Even when I am sitting on the front porch I can smell this candle.

Diptyque Candles

Luxury candles at their best (and most expensive), these candles are saved for special treats. I love to take the travel size candles on vacations to make the hotel seem a little bit more like home. These are the perfect size for traveling and make great gifts as well!

Day 4 of Things I Love: Online Magazines

A few years ago, I was sitting in my office when I got the news. Domino Magazine was done. What!? This couldn't be. There wasn't another magazine out there like Domino. I looked forward to it every month. The husband knew not to open it from it's plastic. Domino and I would have a date every month on the day it arrived; a hot bath and big glass of wine. It was bliss. And then it was gone.

Thankfully, Domino has (almost) been replaced by online magazines. Although I don't have the same routine when these come out (I would hate to drop my iPad in the tub but the glass of wine is certainly still a part of reading them) they do bring enormous joy when I do "thumb" through them.

Matchbook Magazine happens to feature a few of my favorite blog friends including none other than my newest BF Shannon Darrough and the adorable Mackenzie Horan. The editor, Katie Armour has the cutest haircut ever. I wish I had the guts, and the eyebrows, to pull it off. Seriously chic.

One of the first online magazines. There are rumors that Lonny is going under. Say it isn't so!

Ivy & Piper is an Australian online magazine and features gorgeous interiors. Those Australians really know how to design.

Rue Magazine is another favorite that features swank interiors (recently Danielle's apartment from Breakfast at Toast was featured) as well as fashion, recipes, and parties.

Day 3 of Things I Love: Our Birth Story

Our Birth Story

I’ve gone back and forth with how I have felt about sharing our birth story on my blog. It is such a personal story, but it’s one that I am so proud of, and one that I am so happy about that I have decided that I want to share it with you, my sweet readers.

These photos are personal and were made by either Grayson, or our incredibly talented and sweet friend, Millie Holloman. Please do not use these photos without asking.

Throughout my entire pregnancy, friends and families, and even the doctors, told me that I would go into labor early. I’m a petite person and I was carrying a large baby for my frame. The entire two weeks before my due date, I would call my mom every day, assuring her that “No, I am not in labor. Not even a little bit.” My due date came and went with no signs of Tilley-Gray making her way into this world. Monday, November 28^th, the day after my due date, Grayson and I arrived at my doctor’s appointment with hopeful hearts, but there were no signs of any progress. I was the same as I had been two weeks before. Tilley-Gray was in no hurry to come out.

My doctor scheduled an induction that Thursday. I was to call in at 5am to make sure there was a bed available. I was awfully terrified about being induced, but I was excited that we at least had a date set. We knew when our sweet girl would be here. Wednesday night, my mom drove the five hours, from Hickory, to Wilmington, and arrived just around 9pm. I was so relieved to see her. I wanted to make sure she was with me through this entire process. There is just this innate security about moms that makes everything seem OK.

Thursday, December 1: Tilley-Gray makes her debut

330am: I wake up earlier than planned because I am having contractions. Not the Braxton Hicks contractions that we hear so often about, these are the real deal! I wake Grayson up and I get in the shower as he makes eggs and toast for breakfast.

430am: After breakfast, just as I am finishing getting dressed, my water breaks. This is not a gush like you see in the movies, just a trickle. I scream with excitement, and Grayson and my mom are in the bedroom within seconds. It seems that Tilley-Gray has decided that she is ready to come out on her own. She’s not going to be rushed. We are doing this on her time.

5am: Grayson calls the hospital and tells them that although we are scheduled for an induction, my water broke and we are headed to the hospital. As Gray packs up our remaining bags, I tell my mom goodbye. She is going to finish getting ready and she will meet us at the hospital a little later. We take one final picture in front of our house as a family of two and then make our way to the hospital.

530am: We are checked into triage, I change into my hospital gown and they check my vitals. I’m 3 cm (a full 2 cm from my doctor’s appointment on Monday) and my contractions are about every 6 minutes. They are manageable, but still painful.

645am: My mom arrives, and I’m so happy to see her. We are moved into our labor and delivery room. We are on the tale end of the nurse/doctor shift. My nurse is nice, but a little chatty about her upcoming trip to Disney World during my contractions. She tells me that my doctor will be Dr. Wilson and my delivery nurse is named Fifi.

This is Serendipity at it’s best! My contractions are getting stronger and I am ready to do some walking. Grayson and I walk the halls, round and round. Dr. Wilson sees me. He isn’t thrilled because my water has broken. Dr. Wilson tells me to sit tight in my room and I am not too thrilled about this.

730am: Nurse Fifi arrives and she is fabulous. She is in her 50s, has a grey bob haircut with pink streaks and a feather extension. She lives in the country, has chickens, and is a hard-core yogi. She is a killer breathing coach, and she talks about all of the right things, in all of the right places. I could not have dreamed of a better labor and delivery nurse. Fifi gets me a stability ball because I have been banned from walking as mom and Grayson trade off helping me through contractions.

830am: Dr. Wilson comes in and checks me only to find that I have not progressed. I tell him that I do not want Pitocin, but he tells me that it’s dangerous to be in labor longer than 12 hours if my water has already broken. If I haven’t progressed any in an hour, they are starting Pitocin. I don’t seem to have a choice. So it’s back on the stability ball. I’ am determined that I can do this on my own.

945am: Dr. Wilson is back and he checks me again. There has been no progress so Pitocin it is. Fifi warns me that my contractions will be a lot stronger with Pitocin, especially since my water has already broken. I send Grayson out to get coffee and breakfast for himself while mom helps me breathe through the contractions. They are definitely stronger and they are coming closer together. I cry. My mom cries with me and I can’t stop shaking. I’m not ready to get an epidural. I have heard it slows down progression and I want to have this baby before 7pm (when Fifi is done with her shift).

1045am: Grayson and Mom trade off, and while she is gone, the contractions become unbearable. I’m shaking uncontrollably now on the stability ball and sobbing because I am so scared. Grayson cries with me, and, this alone make me cry, because Grayson never cries. I want to try and go a little longer without an epidural.

11am: Dr. Wilson comes in checks me and I’ve only progressed to 4 cm. He tells Fifi to bump up the Pitocin, so back on the stability ball I go. The contractions are so much stronger and I can’t stop shaking. Grayson and Fifi help me breathe through the contractions, but they are incredibly painful.

1120am: I tell Grayson I can’t do it anymore without an epidural. He lets Fifi know and she orders and epidural. I get back in the bed and she brings me a Popsicle and heated blankets.

1145am: The anesthesiologist arrives. I feel so sorry for that doctor. He sees patients at their very worst. I don’t even know what he looks like. He numbs my back but I’m shaking so bad that it’s hard for him to stick the epidural. He has to try three times before it works, but when it does, it really works. Within minutes I am relaxed.

1pm: The epidural has made me feel human again. I am in bed, still with the shakes, but I am reading gossip magazines that Grayson stocked up on and watching the Martha Stewart show. Our sweet friends that had twin boys the Monday before came in to visit with us. My brother, who drove in from Asheville, and my cousin, came in to visit. Grayson’s parents are here as well. It’s nice to have company.

3pm: Neither my mom nor Grayson have eaten so I send Grayson out to get some lunch. Fifi comes in to check me and I have progressed to 8 cm! I can’t believe it. My mom calls Grayson, who nearly has a heart attack that I’m that far along. He calls his parents, and my dad, and Millie so that they all know the progress. We tell them that we don’t want any more visitors and that we want sometime together. Fifi says it could be as little as an hour before I start pushing, but it would take me at least a few hours of pushing, so not to rush.

330pm: Grayson turns on a playlist that I have made and he helps me change into my pretty hospital gown. These are the only few things that I have any control over, and they do make me feel at peace. I am both ready and excited to push. I’m not scared. Millie calls Grayson and tells him that she is at the hospital. I tell him I need a few more minutes of just “us.”

345pm: Fifi comes in again and checks me. She says that I can start pushing now, or, I can wait another hour. I ask her what she would do, and she says that she would push. I tell her I need 15 minutes of prep time. I needed to roll my hair and to put on make-up. (I know, looking back, it’s kind of absurd, but I felt like I was going into battle. I wanted to be prepared.)

4pm: Grayson calls Millie and tells her we are ready for her. Fifi unhooks my epidural and I start pushing. I can feel the contractions more in my back than anything. The contractions are intense, but we joke and laugh in between them.

430pm: Fifi says that she can see Tilley-Gray’s head. She says she has a full head of hair. This thrills me! I can’t wait to see her. I start pushing harder and harder because I’m so determined to see her. Fifi calls for Dr. Wilson. “This baby is going to be here soon” she says.

440pm: Dr. Wilson arrives with a baby nurse, Ali. My temperature is at 101.9 and Dr. Wilson is ready to get the baby out because it is unsafe for the both of us. I push as hard as I can and I go longer on counts than I am asked to do. Fifi counts for me, and Grayson and Millie hold my hands and breathe with me. They all tell me I’m doing great, but Dr. Wilson wants harder pushes. He wants more. “Bear down and get mad Lindsey!, he says.” I push and push.

458pm: I feel like all of my energy is gone. My fever is up to over 102 and my back labor is unbearable. “Just one more push and she will be here!” Dr. Wilson says. My legs are still shaking and I’m crying but I give the biggest push I have yet and then…

5pm: Tilley-Gray arrives. She is the most incredible little girl I have ever seen. Grayson and I both cry as we look at each other, and then at her. They put her on my chest and Grayson cuts the umbilical cord. I can’t believe that I have a daughter.

505pm: I want to hold her but I still have to deliver the placenta. Dr. Wilson pulls on the remaining umbilical cord, but it breaks. My umbilical cord was only attached to the placenta by membranes and is attached to my uterine wall. Dr. Wilson has to go in and by hand, remove the placenta from my uterus. This is more painful than anything I have experienced all day. My fever is up, my epidural is gone, and I’m loosing a lot of blood. I’m screaming from the pain and Grayson comes back to me while Dr. Wilson calls the baby nurse as well as another in to assist. Millie is with Tilley-Gray, camera in one hand, bulb syringe in the other. What a blessing for all of these people.

530pm: The placenta is finally out and without going into to many graphic details, it was the worst pain I have ever been in. Dr. Wilson said some technical term for what happened that I can’t remember, but equated it as being as rare as being struck by lighting. He said that if they would have known this was the case, I would have been on bed rest from day 1 and would have had a scheduled c-section. I was so lucky that I was not in a car accident or did not fall during pregnancy. It would have killed the baby and I could have bled to death. The thought of this is terrifying but I focus on how blessed we are with our new, healthy baby.

615pm: After Grayson and I spend alone time with Tilley-Gray and I have nursed her for the first time he goes out to the waiting room to tell our parents our parents the details. Grayson’s mom says that Tilley-Gray was born at “Happy Hour”. We bring our parents in, one by one, followed by our brothers and cousins in one large group. We are a family full of boys (I’m the only girl on both sides) and it was amazing to see five big guys with our tiny little girl.

That night, Grayson and I move up to the post-partum room and just stared at our new baby. It was such an incredible thing that we had just been through and we were over filled with joy. I didn’t feel well, but I could only think about how blessed we were. The following days are a blur. Grayson let our friends know that I wasn’t feeling up for company so it was just mainly family that visited. I had to stay an extra night and have a blood transfusion because I lost so much blood during delivery. The morning after I had her, I looked at Grayson and told him that as hard as it was, I would do it all over again every day. It was certainly the very best day of my life.

Thank you so much for letting me share my story with you. It is something that you can never imagine until you go through it, and again, I am incredibly blessed to have a friend like Millie Holloman to document those priceless, precious moments. This story and these pictures are things that I love and cherish so much. Thank you so much again Millie!

The day after Christmas, Millie came over with a new film camera to take photos of Tilley-Gray. She had not used film in almost seven years and kept telling us that she wasn't sure they were going to turn out. (You can see that they certainly did!)

I was so yellow from my blood tranfusion and still felt "huge" so I refused to let any one to take photos of me. These are some of the only photos I have with Tilley-Gray when she was brand new and I'm so grateful for these. Millie, thanks again!

I came across Liz Caan Interiors a few months ago and just remembered how much I really loved her design. It's layered and bright and preppy, which are things I love most in design. Her website is so much fun to look through where you can find more images like the ones below.

Is this kitchen not fab?

First, I love the black and white horizontal stripes and I love that she did them on the ceiling as well.

Second, check out that booth. Other than being such a smart use of space, this is actually a table that families use. No excuses in sitting in front of the TV for dinner!

I love the botanical prints that she has hung on her windows. Would you consider doing that?

Is this not one of the most precious girls rooms you have ever seen? I love the colors and the wallpaper. When she is a little older, just take the drapes down and change the chandelier and the room could turn into a teenagers room pretty easily!

The chevron stripes on the stairs are so chic.

Are y'all sick of chevron yet? I have my moments, but deep down, I still love it.

I love love love the art work. It could go in so many different rooms but I love that such a whimsical painting is over a formal sofa.

I had a baby during the holiday season which was magical... except for the whole over indulging part. I've got 20 pounds to loose and am more motivated than ever to do it. I finally got clearance from the doctor that I can start working out. I'm really excited except for the fact that all I have are too small gym clothes or maternity leggings, so I need some new kicks and clothes to get me started.

I want to invest in some key pieces that will not only give me the right tools to work out, but will also make me look good doing it! No more excuses I say!

I love that I can workout and spend time with Tilley-Gray while on a run. It's the best of both worlds!

Yoga is another great way for me to shed these pounds and my gym offers amazing classes!

I assured him that it was for after the baby. (And I started this week. It's no joke. I pour sweat and can hardly walk the next day... I think it's working!)

I'm off and away to Hickory until 2012! Spending New Year's Eve with my family is my idea of perfect. We are ringing in the New Year with bubbly, great food, hats, and noise makers all at my parents home. We always have the best time when we get together so I know that this party will not disappoint! While I will no doubt not be wearing sequins or a ballgown this year, it's always nice to have a little inspiration. Skinny jeans (if I can squeeze!) and a pair of big diamond studs can be just as festive, no?

This year has been an incredible year of blessings, change, and happiness.

Fresh for the New Year

I can't believe that Christmas is almost here! This is my first year not going to my parents house (tears are coming out now) but it's time for the husband and I to start our own traditions. When I think of Christmas, I think of going to church, seeing my family, exchanging gifts, reading the Christmas story, watching The Christmas Story over and over on TBS, and of course, eating lots and lots of great food. While I may not be able to replicate all of those traditions exactly here, I can certainly try by starting our own traditions. First on the list... food. And lots of it!

We are going to my in-laws tonight but will be back in town tomorrow in time for me to make a decadent Christmas Eve dinner of fettuccine Alfredo. We hardly ever eat pasta, but I think it's a great one pot dish and will be perfect with a good bottle of red wine. Our neighbors are doing fondue Christmas Eve night, so what's better than pasta, wine, and dark chocolate?

Christmas morning, we will wake up, open presents, and of course Tilley-Gray will have presents to open from Santa! I'm making an overnight French Toast Casserole that I made last year from Ezra Pound Cake. It is so good and super easy to make.

For Christmas dinner, we are making a short rib pot pie. I'm a bit nervous about this because I have never made it, but I'm thinking that if all else fails, we can have cheese, bread, and wine for dinner!

It looks so yummy and cozy and perfect for a Christmas Day dinner!

Tis the Season

Tilley-Gray strikes a pose

(She is 3 weeks today!)

My sweet step-sisters sent me my absolute favorite treat in the world, macaroons from Laduree in NYC on Tuesday. Our neighbors gave us a bottle of Veuve Clicquot when we got home from the hospital. What a perfect combination? It was pretty fancy for a Tuesday night!

Grayson is one proud daddy.

And believe it or not, I was given macaroons two days in a row! Heaven!

First, from Laduree and then from my favorite local bakery, Flower and Flour. They dropped off Christmas treats yesterday and it was such a sweet surprise. So much for eating healthy this week. My no sweets policy might just have to start after the new year!

Happy Monday! A little over a week since Tilley-Gray arrived and we are adjusting to a family of three pretty well. My mom left on Friday (I balled like a baby) and got me back to feeling good, taught me a ton about babies and being a mom, and fed us like kings for a week. I begged her to stay; aren't moms just the best?

I can't wait to share the details of our birth day, but there are so many so I am trying to cut it down. We had to stay in the hospital an extra day because I had to have a blood transfusion (more on that later) so I'm still not 100% but I'm on the up and up. Welcome Tilley-Gray

Tilley-Gray Gwyneth Cheek, the second love of my life, arrived in fantastic style Thursday, December 1, at 5:00 pm. She was 8 pounds and 21.75 inches beautiful. Lindsey did an amazing job and she is such a wonderful mom.

This is Grayson, better known here as "The Husband." Lindsey asked that I please update all of you because she wants to share this special moment in our lives. I have tried to wrap my head around how to tell the greatest story of our lives. I have decided to give you what I can and Lindsey will fill in the rest. Here goes:

Serendipitous is the only word I can find to describe the unfolding of this beautiful story. To start, Lindsey was scheduled to be induced Thursday morning. We were to call the hospital at 5:00 am to see if a bed was available, but Lindsey went into natural labor at 3:30 am. Her water broke at home just an hour later, which was so important to Lindsey, as she wanted to give birth as naturally as possible (with the absolute exception that she accept the gift of an epidural). Today was meant to be the day.

I gathered our bags, numerous as they were, and helped Lindsey to the car to travel the 1.8 miles to the hospital. We were having our baby TODAY. This is where things got even better. In our delivery room we were introduced to our nurse named, and get this, Fifi. No, kidding! So here we are with two Fifis in the room, and they both instantly had a calm sense of purpose about them.

Lindsey labored until about 3:40 pm when Fifi told her that it was time to start pushing - we were about to have our beautiful baby girl. This prompted Lindsey to tell Fifi that she needed 15 minutes to hot roll her hair and do her makeup. Lindsey would not have Tilley-Gray arrive to anything other than her mother at her absolute best. She is the most beautiful mother there ever was (this shot was taken seconds after we became a family).

Lindsey pushed for one hour and our little girl arrived with the prettiest, fullest head of brown hair. She is going to give her father so many happy days and a ton of gray hair.

The photos in this post were taken by Millie Holloman. Up until Thursday, Lindsey and I were fortunate enough to call Millie a close friend. Now, she is simply part of our family. Millie, who is in my opinion the world's best photographer, was the only other person in the room with us. She, in addition to capturing the special moments you see here, was also helping Lindsey count through her contractions. After Tilley-Gray's arrival, I saw her with camera in one hand and bulb syringe in the other. She was wonderful.

Today we are a happy family of Three. There are so many more details that I want to share, but Lindsey is excited about coming back. I will save the rest for her. In the meantime, here is one more picture of one proud father who just fell in love all over again.

Tomorrow is the Day

I'm getting induced tomorrow, Thursday, December 1. It doesn't look like Miss Tilley-Gray has any intentions coming out on her own, and as she grows to a healthy weight inside my body, I won't be able to have her naturally if she gets much bigger. I am so excited to meet her finally and to see Grayson with her for the first time. For some reason, that is one of the things I am most excited about.

The induction process is a bit nerve racking. I have to call in at 5am to see if the hospital has a bed open, and if they do, we will go in at 7am. If not, we have to keep calling until they have availability. Once we are at the hospital, they will start a series of things on me and then it's a waiting game. Please keep us in your prayers tonight and tomorrow. I know that will have been covered in prayer this entire pregnancy and I am so thankful for that.

The house is clean, the cars are clean with full tanks of gas, the pantry stocked, the dogs groomed, the bills paid, the Christmas decorations are up, and our bags have been packed (at least mine and Tilley-Gray's) for three weeks. I'm a planner by nature, so you know I had to do a few things extra for this delivery. They are totally unnecessary, but doing them is my way of coping, of bringing a sense of calmness and control over tomorrow.

I know that she doesn't need her own bag, but I wanted to take swaddle blankets, and onesies, and her baby book, so it was just better that she had her own bag. I found this one at J.Crew and had a girlfriend add the applique with her monogram. I love how it turned out and know that she will be using it a lot when she starts to visit her grandparents.

Hosptial Sign

I wanted to have a sign that we could put on the door of the hospital welcoming all of our visitors. I found a shop on Etsy and the designer was so great to work with.

(There is a tiny hyphen in there for those of you wondering)

A Hosptial Gown

This was so important to me and I was lucky enough to be gifted one by the sweet people from B.Y.O.G. There is something about being in a gown that hasn't been worn by other people and that looks good (aren't these gowns precious?!) that brings a sense of calmness to me. The fabric is incredibly soft and it came in sizes, meaning that it is proportionate to my 5'1" frame. During our birthing class, I held up a hosptial gown and those things are definetly one size fits all. My good friend Millie Holloman has also offered to take photos of the birth and it will be so nice not to be in an ugly blue gown during those first precious moments captured.

Tomorrow at this time, I may just be a momma, and that is so incredible to me. Thank you all for your well wishes and prayers.

Pregnancy Essentials

I was lucky enough to be on the end of a long string of friends who became pregnant. I have heard tons of funny stories, was given great advice, and have seen each one of them go through their pregnancy, delivery, and now mommyhood with such style and grace. Here are a few of my must-haves for all of you new mommas-to-be out there that will hopefully get you through your pregnancy too.

1. Jenny McCarthy's Belly Laughs Book

This is the one pregnancy book that didn't completely freak me out. It's hilarious and informative and after reading everything she went through (she had the worst of the worst), your pregnancy might seem like a breeze.

2. A few good pairs of maternity jeans

Don't skimp on these, you will wear them to pieces until you are 9 months pregnant and can't fit in them anymore. That's right, you will be too big for maternity clothes. Buy a size or two up and just go ahead and embrace them. The belly band thing didn't really work for me, so I went straight from rubber banding my pants to maternity pants. Shopbop has the best selection.

3. Power Momma Spanx

These saved my life through wedding season. I know you might be thinking "why in the world would you want to wear spanx when you are pregnant," but I promise, they make things so much more comfortable when you are wearing dresses and on your feet all day.

4. Cute maternity tops

Go ahead and just buy a few maternity tops. I went to my favorite boutiques and bought a size up, but could only wear those until about month 7 or 8. It's not a pretty sight to see your bare belly in the reflection of a Target mirror when you have a regular shirt on that you think is passing for a maternity shirt, believe me. It happened this past weekend. Not pretty. Asos has really cute tops that aren't too expensive and Old Navy makes the softest, longest t-shirts for under $10.00. Just go ahead and get you some, because that belly will get bigger than you can imagine.

(These models are obviously not pregnant, but you get the idea)

5. Johnson's Baby Oil

My skin became really dry and itchy as it stretched and the expensive stretch mark cremes didn't help. Johnson's baby oil was the best thing for me and I don't have a single stretch mark. Just make sure to put it on and let it dry as much as possible before you put on any clothes.

6. A good pair of running shoes

Walking is one of the very best things you can do while you are pregnant. Without fail, I walked at least 3 miles a day and I feel like my pregnancy has been so good because of that. A good pair of running shoes is the key. I have gone through two sets of shoes in the past 9 months, and these Brooks are by far the most comfortable pair of shoes I have ever owned.

7. Healthy Food

I know this seems obvious, but the past 9 months I have craved nothing but fruit, especially berries. Your body is an amazing thing and when I would eat poorly, I would pay for it big time later on that day. I snacked on raw almonds, berries, and smoothies with the occasional chocolate chip cookie (or 2) and it made me feel so much better than noshing on chips and candy.

8. A Good Attitude

I've been told that I'm an eternal optimist (and not in the nicest way), but I really do believe that you can set your own path with your attitude. Yes, I had morning sickness and swollen feet and feel huge and uncomfortable, but it's been done by millions of women and will be done by so many more, so I knew I could do it too. My sweet husband hears about it, but I tried to stay upbeat and embrace all of the changes. There are so many people out there they can't become pregnant, so I feel blessed that I became pregnant so quickly and with a healthy baby.

9. A little pampering

Manicures and pedicures were my feel-goods during pregnancy. I had two massages and they just didn't do it for me. They did the trick for some of my girlfriends, but not for me. With a mani and pedi, at least when your feet and hands are swollen they will be well buffed and polished.

10. Girlfriends
Above anything else, my girlfriends have been my source of strength and guidance. When I watched scary "Baby Story" episodes while on the treadmill at the gym, they were the ones that told me to turn it off. When I was having gloomy days and thinking "How can I ever be a mom", they reassured me that I could do. They have called me and prayed for me and I am so grateful for that. My family and husband have been incredibly supportive this entire time, but there is nothing like a good group of girlfriends to lift you up and make you feel loved.

I have a peace over me, at least for now, that she will be coming out soon and I've made it this far, so what's a few more days? I've been told that a "well cooked" baby makes for a better baby who eats and sleeps better. I'm just so ready to meet her and I'm dreading the next few days home alone. I've been spoiled with having the husband's company for the past four days and am not ready for alone time at the house just waiting for something to happen.

In the meantime, counting down the days, I have become slightly obsessed with finding the perfect wall calednar for 2012.

Weekend

How has your weekend been so far? Ours has been eventful/uneventful. Eventful in that we have been busy with house projects, decorating, and going out to yummy dinners. Uneventful in that Tilley-Gray still has not come. (Her official due date is tomorrow, Sunday, November 27) I know she will come out when she is good and ready, but let me tell you, momma is ready!

Thursday we had a great Thanksgiving with Grayson's family and hosted it at our house. It was such a laid back day, I forgot to take any photos of the family, but we did sneak in a photo of Grayson and me with the dogs and our Christmas tree.

Grayson decorated our house with garland and lights. I love this time of year!

We also went to our "last supper" at Port Land Grill. Pregnancy really has gotten the best of me and I have been prone to order things like this goodness below. That's right, sweet potato fries with truffle oil and Parmesan cheese. They were beyond good. I also had a Shepherd's pie for dinner and then we split tiramisu for dessert, but who's really counting at this point?

The weekend was also full of afternoon naps and snuggles with the dogs. Polly in particular likes to make pillow forts. I'm glad that I invested good money in Kelly Weartsler and Lulu DK fabric so that my dogs can snuggle on quality. I'm sure that's what I will be thinking once Tilley-Gray gets here.

So her official due date is tomorrow and I couldn't be more excited! I have a feeling she might just be fashionably late, but who knows at this point. I will keep you all posted!

Nursery

I'm so sorry I didn't have a chance to post nursery pictures this weekend. I had grand plans to do so yesterday and decided that propping up my elephant ankles was a better idea. It's amazing how big they have gotten over the past two days!

Decorating the nursery has been a slow and steady process and one that the husband and I have really enjoyed together. Before we found out what we were having, I found the animal heads from Anthropologie and bought them right away, knowing that boy or girl, I wanted them in the nursery. I think that they are so fun!

In the beginning, we were going to use the crib that I had when I was a baby, but it was a drop-side crib, which the government outlawed this summer. Back to square one, I struggled with finding a crib that was gender neutral (we want to have more babies eventually) and fit with the style of our house. I looked at dozens of cribs, but in the end, I kept going back to Dwell Studio's Century crib. If you are thinking about this crib, here is a little money saving hint. I loved the crib so much, but with it already being expensive, I didn't want to pay $200 for shipping. I found free shipping at myurbanchild.com and after your first purchase, they send you a 20% coupon for your next purchase.

So, I got the crib 20% with free shipping!

The name bunting came from a favorite Etsy shop, which we also used in our maternity photos.

My Aunt Deb made the bumper pad and the drapes and I'm so happy with how they turned out! The white fabric is just a cotton twill, a fabric that won't shrink when I put it in the wash. The other fabric is from Lewis and Sheron, which I got for 50% off because a sweet friend that lives in Atlanta where Lewis and Sheron is located went by with a coupon and then had the fabric shipped to me.

The chandelier is from Ikea that Grayson spent an entire Sunday afternoon spray painting gold. It makes gorgeous shadows on the wall at night that I think Tilley-Gray will love.

The glider is from Serena & Lily and it is beyond comfortable. White may not have been the wisest choice for a glider, but it is a slip cover, so it can be thrown in the wash.

The dresser is an entire week's work of DIY. The dresser is from Ikea. I didn't want to buy a changing table, but the dresser was too short to function as one, so Grayson added legs that he found at Lowe's. The original plan was to have the dresser lacquered the coral/poppy color, but once it was in the room, I knew that it really needed to be white. The overlays are from My Overlays and I love how they add a little character to the dresser.

These little guys were a gift and are one of my favorite things in the nursery.

With just six days until her due date, I am so excited to finally meet Tilley-Gray. The nursery was a fun project over the past several months, and I can't wait to walk in to that room and see her sleeping in her crib or rock her while reading her books. I already love her so much and am anxiously awaiting her arrival. I know she will come out when she is ready, but I wouldn't mind one bit if it was sometime this week! Holiday Parties and Weekend Plans

Last night was Monkee's of Wilmington Holiday Open House. It's always so much fun to go to. They have champagne and hors d'oeuvres, a DJ, and 25% off the entire store. Every year, I see people that I haven't seen since the previous year and meet new friends as well; plus all the girls that work there are total dolls. This year was no different with lots of goodies including a trunk show from the New York City based store What Goes Around Comes Around featuring vintage furs and Chanel handbags and jewelery. Monkee's also had a ton of new holiday clothes and shoes in stock.

This was one of my favorite finds of the night. Wouldn't that black dress be so great for Christmas or New Year's parties? I also am in love with the Kate Spade heels. Perfect for a cocktail dress or skinny jeans and a silk top and little jacket.

This fur and bag are from What Goes Around Comes Around. I tried the bag on because, let's be honest, it would make the absolute best diaper bag ever, but I'm positive the husband would murder me if he saw a charge for $4500 anywhere on our credit card bill. It's pretty fab though, isn't it?

One of my other favorite items of the night was this jeweled jacket. I don't have a dressy winter coat and think that this might fit the bill. Perfect weight for Wilmington weather and would be great with cocktail dresses or jeans. I love the details.

Monkee's always has the best window displays for their holiday parties and this year did not disappoint. The photos don't do them justice, but all of their windows looked beautiful!

After socializing for a few hours and catching up with old friends, it was great to go home and be greeted by Grayson and an anxious Polly Anna who just wanted a snuggle. (PS: She is looking a little raggedy these days but is on schedule to get a haircut next week. Bless her heart)

When I got home, Gray was watching the UNC game and it was the perfect opportunity for me to read the new House Beautiful that had just come in the mail. I almost stroked when I saw Society Social featured on page 28 under the subtitle "The Best." Isn't that incredible!? Roxy has come a long ways since she started last year and has ended up in one of the most prestigious design magazines out there. (I've told you that we are from the same home town and our parents live in the same neighborhood right?)

In baby news, I had my last doctor's appointment today before my official due date. I haven't progressed any since last Friday but my spirits are still high and I know she will make her debut when she is good and ready. I am just so anxious to meet Tilley-Gray I can hardly stand it.

Tonight, Gray and I are having dinner with our new friends Shannon and Will Darrough and I can't wait! Oh, and I promise, nursery photos to come this weekend!

Weekend Recap

Sorry this is so late! My last official day of work was today, filled with food and cake tastings and planning details with a May bride. Not too bad for a last day of work, right? I hope your weekend was great. Mine was the perfect combination of relaxing and socializing.

Friday night, the husband and I stayed in, made homemade pizza, and watched the UNC game. I also perused the new Martha Stewart magazine and guess what? She likes OPI's designer...debetter polish too. Say it ain't so. Who knew we had so much in common.

Saturday was filled with a late breakfast at our favorite spot, Saltworks II which our next door neighbor owns. It's so good for breakfast, if you are ever in Wilmington, I highly recommend it. Saturday night we went to a cocktail party at my good friend Carson's house. Here are just a few of my girlfriends that were in attendance, Elisha, me Kelly, and Carson. I'm horrible at taking pictures so there about 10 other girlfriends that I didn't get pictures with, but we all had so much fun hanging out. I love a good cocktail party but being 9.5 months pregnant can pose a major wardrobe challenge. I was able to stretch a cashmere sweater dress and thankfully an old trusty Gryphon leather jacket still fit. I bought it about 5 years ago in New York from Intermix and I have gotten my monies worth out of it!

Sunday was filled with total nesting before the in-laws came in town. We couldn't stop. Cabinets were emptied and shelves were wiped down, dogs were washed, sheets were changed; even the pantry got an overall. Do I see a babe in my near future? Hopefully she won't be tardy because I'm not sure I can contain my excitement to meet her. Grayson and I are so excited we can hardly stand it. (I'm terrified, but excited!)

The past few nights, the husband has been cooking because I haven't been feeling 100%, but tonight I'm hoping to redeem myself with this healthy, hearty, vegetable soup. With 2.5 weeks to go until this sweet babe comes, a clean house, and a meal on the table when he gets home from work, I will most certainly look like a rockstar in his eyes, right?

chunky veg soup

recipe adapted from Donna Hay

1 tbsp olive oil

1 onion, chopped

2 cloves of garlic, chopped finely

2 stalks of celery, chopped

3 carrots, chopped

1 tbsp fresh thyme

sea salt and fresh ground pepper

2 x cans of chopped tomatoes (14oz)

1 1/2 litres of water or stock

1 cup of pasta (your choice)

In a large sauce pan over medium heat add the oil, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, thyme and salt and pepper and cook until just soft. Add the tomatoes and water and simmer for 15 minutes. Add the pasta and cook for another 8-10 min. Serves 4-6.

Exactly one year ago, the husband and I were in Paris. You can read about our trip here and here.

I remember strolling the streets and eating French macaroons almost everyday, sipping on espresso and pain au chocolate at Eric Kayser bakery planning the day ahead of us, and having three hour lunches at the neighborhood brasserie after shopping at Merci and Colette. It was such an amazing time and a trip that I will never forget.

I needed a little spiff up yesterday and went to see one of my friends, Elisha, who owns Blush. I never go in with a plan because I trust her so much, but just knew I needed to do something a little less blonde. First, because it's fall, and second, because I won't have the money or the time to go in every six weeks for a touch up once Tilley-Gray arrives. Without fail, I walked out of Blush feeling great. I became chicken at the last minute and asked her to do normal highlights in the front so it wouldn't be too dramatic. We decided on a subtle Ombre style that will grow out nicely.

And this is what we ended up with. I wanted regular highlights that would eventually grow out so it wouldn't be too different, but I'm happy with the color and the blonder ends.

AND.... It's officially November, which means that we have 3.5 weeks to go, but who's counting?!

I love Halloween and am so excited about tonight. I already have dinner ready (I made BBQ last night in the crockpot) and have the biggest bowl of candy you have ever seen ready for all of our trick-or-treaters. It is mass chaos in our neighborhood on Halloween and everyone sits on their porches and gives out candy while the kids zig zag from house to house. A few houses down even has a graveyard set up and a live bagpipe player. Pretty impressive huh?

Can I just tell ya'll how much your comments made my day yesterday. Sometimes when I post things like that, I'm worried that there may be some disappointment or judgement, but no, ya'll just gave me encouragement and it's exactly what I needed, so thank you!

Tonight, the husband and I are going to a Halloween party at the Club with some sweet friends of ours that just had a little girl. I'm excited to see how Grayson is around all of the babies. We are less than one month away!

Becoming a new mom comes with excitement and joy, but to be honest, these past few weeks I have been totally freaked out. I wish I could fast forward and just see what it's going to be like a year from now, just to make sure that we are still OK. Do other soon to be moms feel the same way? Recently, I purchased these beauties for chairs that flank our bar. I couldn't find quite what I was looking for, so I headed to Etsy and asked Stephanie if she could create something custom for me. Stripes are my very favorite pattern, and it is very apparant throughout my home and my closet. I don't NEED five black and white striped shirts, but I always gravitate towards those in the morning when I'm rushed to get ready. Here are some of my favorite striped walls and floors.

Birthday Weekend

I hope ya'll had a great weekend! Mine was jam packed full of birthday festivities, a yard sale, a wedding, and an early Halloween party.

My birthday started out with breakfast in bed from my sweet husband. We lounged around the house with the dogs and took our time with the morning. We packed up the dogs and took them to the loop at Wrightsville Beach and then ventured out onto the beach. Polly and Cooper LOVE running and swimming on the beach so we took them down to the far end so they could do so.

I'm feeling extra large these days with just 5 weeks to go. I don't think I'm eating any more than usual, but I watch in amazement as my body and belly continue to grow bigger and bigger! Grayson suggested that we go to lunch at the Oceanic so we could enjoy the gorgeous weather and sit on the pier. We had the best time at our late lunch and sat outside for a few hours just enjoying the scenery.

Grayson had a beer with lunch and at the bottom of his glass was a tiny anchor. I love it!

When we got back to the house, Grayson gave me these beauties as a birthday gift. I told him not to buy me a thing, especially after I accidentally purchased a major piece of art work last week, but he couldn't resist. I saw these a few weeks ago on Rachel Roy and stroked out over them. I think they will be so cute with skinny jeans (once I can get back in those skinny jeans) and even dresses come spring.

PS: They are unbelievably comfortable

That night, Grayson had another surprise in store, dinner at my favorite French restaurant, Caprice. We always go there for special occasions and sit at the same table every time. We had an 8:30pm dinner reservation which made it the latest I had been in non-pajamas in a long time!

The next day was a whirlwind. We woke up at 6:30am and had a yard sale. Those yard sale people mean business and the serious ones where there at 7am. It was a successful sale and we were able to get rid of a lot of old furniture, lighting, and accessories that we haven't used in a long time. We packed up what didn't sell and were off to an afternoon wedding in downtown Wilmington. After staying for a little while at the reception, we slipped away and went to a annual Halloween party at the Reed's House.

This year's theme was "Night on the High Sea." Grayson wanted to be an Old Salt, I think more to smoke his pipe than anything. I didn't have a lot of choices because I can't fit into anything these days, so I was a puffer fish. We took a t-shirt, duct taped the back of it and then poked golf tees through the tape and the shirt so I would have spikes like a puffer fish. What do you think? It was a hit at the party!

On Sunday, we recovered for most of the day after such a busy Saturday and then that evening, Grayson invited our neighbors over for Smores around our new fire pit. It was a fabulous, full weekend. I hope yours was as well!

Pink Ribbon and a Surprise Purchase

Last week was a whirwind with a busy Thursday with Pink Ribbon, a diaper dinner on Friday for our friends who are having twins, my very last wedding of the season on Saturday, and our couples baby shower on Sunday. It was such a fun weekend and I can't believe that it is already over. I recovered from all of the festivities yesterday. Having a social calendar that full can really wear you out!

I was invited to the Pink Ribbon breakfast and dinner by my sweet friend, Elisha, who owns Blush. We had a ball at the breakfast and then the husband and I joined Elisha and her husband, Lee, that night for the dinner.

The breakfast was a ton of fun and Mary Kay Andrews, one of my favorite authors was the speaker. She is just as hysterical in person as she is in her books. If you haven't read any of her books, you should! They are easy reads and will make you smile!

The centerpieces at the breaksfast were cakes, and our table had cake pops. I thought these were hysterical!

There was a silent auction and Paysage donated a piece of art I have long admired. The retail value is somewhere around $2,500.00 but the opening bid was much, much, much less. Waaay less. No one had bid on it but there was a buzz around it so I decided to break the seal and put my name down for the minimum bid. Because I was an invited guests and had not made a donation, it was the least I could do, right? Surely, someone else would bit on it.

That evening, Grayson and I went and joined our friends for the dinner. On the way, I told the husband what I had done, and showed him a picture of it from when it was on the cover of House Beautiful. He was impressed and really liked the artwork, but neither one of us mentioned it the rest of the ride there.

At the end of the night, my name was the only one on the bid sheet. I thought that Grayson was going to KILL me. I told him I was sorry about 100 times, but he kept saying that he wasn't mad and he was glad that we had won it. Thank goodness that there was an open bar there for him; he could have all the scotches he wanted!

Lee and Grayson loaded our new painting into the back of my car and as I drove home, I was so excited for the purchase. The next afternoon, Grayson came home for lunch and hung it up in it's new home and I think it looks great. It was an unexpected purchase, but that is the best way to make your house a home. So instead of the shoes for birthday and jewels for a push present, I am now the proud owner of a beautiful piece of art work. I'm happy to have things like this in my house that our entire family can enjoy!

In other news, we had a couples baby shower that was so much fun on Sunday! We are so blessed by sweet friends! Photos of that to come, but in the meantime I have to share one of my favorite gifts...

Isn't that the cutest? I'm not sure how Cooper will respond to Tilley-Gray, but at least he will look his best when they finally meet!

A little recap

The weeks and weekends have been full of preparation for Tilley-Gray's arrival. Mom and I went a little crazy this past weekend in Charlotte. She bought Tilley-Gray the littlest skinny jeans at Gap. I could die they are so cute.

Insomnia has set in and I have been a walking zombie the past few weeks. Yesterday a girlfriend told me that I could take Tylenol PM. I could have kissed her on the mouth I was so excited. Last night I got a solid six hours of sleep and feel like a super star today.

They say that pregnancy rubs off on those around you, and it is most definitely the case on my sweet dog, Polly. She is comatose at all hours of the day. Case in point...

She is the most loyal dog, so when I wake up in the middle of the night, so does she. Since we both had a restful night last night, she was bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning. Note the snaggle tooth. She is in major need of braces. Bless her heart.
