Redemption Salad

Our first weekend at home after a string of weekends traveling has me in the organizing, cleaning, and cooking mode. I have been slack about cooking lately but certainly redeemed myself after making this salad. Yes, redemption after making a salad.... it's THAT good! 

Kale, Brussels Sprouts, and Bacon Salad 

adapted from Sugar and Grace

For dressing:

2 Tbs fresh lemon juice

1 Tbs dijon mustard

1 tsp shallot, finely minced

1 small clove garlic, finely minced

1/8 tsp kosher salt

Pinch black pepper

1/4 c extra virgin olive oil

For salad:

2-3 c thinly sliced kale (approx 1/2 a bunch)

1 lb brussels sprouts, finely shredded using a mandolin or sharp knife

3-4 slices bacon, baked and chopped

1/4 c roasted almonds, chopped

1/2 c Pecorino cheese, finely grated

DIRECTIONS:

Cook the bacon in a frying pan until it's nice and crispy. While it's frying, chop brussels sprouts. Once the bacon is done, pour out grease and add chopped brussels sprouts, stirring continuously until they are slightly browned (5 - 8 minutes.) Combine all dressing ingredients in a small bowl and mix. Add in olive oil, whisking  until combined.Mix sliced kale and shaved roasted brussels sprouts in a large bowl. Throw in bacon, almonds, and cheese. Pour dressing over the top and toss salad until all ingredients are distributed throughout.

weekend road trip to charleston

This weekend Gray and I are high tailing it to Charleston for an adult only weekend and I could not be more excited. Don't get me wrong, I love my kids and love spending the weekends with them, but I'm looking forward to having leisurely lunches, late dinners, and unscheduled days while we are there. We are going to visit good friends  that live right in the heart of Charleston. Our friends sent us a little sneak peak of the weekend, and luckily it's centered around great restaurants with a little paddle boarding and shopping in between. 

The Americano, Poe's,  492, and Cannon Green are all on the agenda and I can't wait. I'm also looking forward to shopping on King Street including stops at Hampden Clothing and Mac & Murphy.

Any favorites in Charleston I should add? Would love to hear!

Happy Bastille Day!

On July 14th, 1789, crowds stormed the Bastille fortress-prison in Paris to release prisoners who had been unfairly locked away by Louis XVI. In honor of France’s La Fête Nationale (Bastille Day), here are a few of my favorite French things:

Saint James Sailor Shirts

French Macaroons, they make me weak at the knees 

French cheese, another guilty pleasure. I could make an entire dinner out of just French cheese! 

Hermes scarves. What's not to love. They make any outfit look great, they come in gorgeous boxes, and can you wear them a thousand different ways. Voila, as the French girls say, so chic.

After a sleepless night and a day full of cleaning and packing for Charleston, I think I'll make a dinner of wine (for the husband), cheese, fruit, olives, nuts, and good bread for dinner in honor of Bastille Day. (and a great excuse not to cook!)

Nesting Newbie On-line Magazine

You all know my obsession with interior design, fashion, home, cooking, etc. etc. magazines. Lonny magazine, an interior design online magazine has been featured here more than a few times. I have a love/hate relationship with online magazines because taking my laptop in the bathtub is not a very good idea and I can't rip the pages out and tuck them away for the future as I do with my other magazines.
